During these unexpected and unusual times, wearing a mask and social distancing is a must to help keep us safe. But did you know eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle (as best as we can) will also help keep our immune system firing which can help keep us healthy and protected?

Daily consumption of varied nutritious foods can help boost our immunity, so while we are in the midst of winter and are facing the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought I would share my top immune-boosting foods. Of course there are the obvious immune-boosting vitamins but here are my top four foods to help boost your immunity.

Garlic

Did you know garlic does more than just add flavour to our food? Garlic is a great source of phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are natural compounds which work to detoxify carcinogens in our bodies, making them powerful immune-boosting foods.

Yoghurt

Although it may sound cliché, it is true to say that if we feel good on the inside we are more likely to feel good on the outside. This is because most of our body’s immunity occurs in our gut. Having a healthy gut boosts our immunity and the best way we can promote a healthy gut is by consuming probiotics. One of the most common and tasty high probiotic foods that is easily accessible to us is yoghurt.

Berries

Berries are a great source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are essential for boosting our immune systems as they fight against the oxidative stress that is caused by the free radicals circulating in our bodies. The best bit is, there are a number of different berries that offer the same benefits: blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries - so you won’t get bored!

Eggs

With the winter months comes less exposure to Vitamin D, and low levels of Vitamin D may increase our risk of illness related to poor immune health. There's not many food sources that are high in Vitamin D, with the exception of eggs. Eggs are not only naturally high in Vitamin D, they also contain other immune boosting nutrients.

Together with a balanced diet, active lifestyle and maintaining good social distancing practices, these immune-boosting foods can help improve your immune system and have you feeling better in no time.
